Beautiful and historic mosque in Triplicane. It is a large mosque and is very well and strictly maintained by the authorities. The cleanliness and overall upkeep are impressive, making it a peaceful place for offering prayers. The mosque was built in 1795 and is considered the largest mosque in Triplicane. Despite its age, the place has been maintained very well while preserving its historical character. The mosque was recently renovated in March this year in 2026, which has further improved its appearance and facilities. The prayer hall is fully air-conditioned with over 60 ton capacity, making it much more comfortable for worshippers, especially during Chennai's hot weather. It can accommodate 5000 persons at a time for prayer. They open tents in ground area for Jummah prayer and Eid's to get covered from Sun. They also have dedicated phone application to download in mobile phone for information. One thing I particularly appreciate is that many of the administrative staff and people involved in operating and maintaining the mosque are Hindu/non-Muslim, yet they are managing their responsibilities very well and maintaining the place in a respectful and proper manner. It is genuinely good to see people from different religious backgrounds working together and contributing to the peaceful functioning and maintenance of such an important religious place. This kind of cooperation shows religious harmony and mutual respect, especially in an area with several important religious and historical landmarks. Must visit if visiting chennai or living in chennai.. Wallajah Mosque is an excellent combination of history, beautiful architecture, cleanliness, modern facilities, and religious harmony. A truly impressive and well-maintained mosque with a legacy of more than two centuries.

See all on GoogleOne of the most interesting features is the Persian/Arabic chronogram inside the mosque. It was composed by Raja Makhan Lal Khirad, a Hindu official who served as the Nawab’s munshi. The inscription “Dhikrullahi Akbar” indicates the construction year as 1209 AH / 1794 CE.
MashAllah excellent mosque with the recent renovation works.... The only problem parking and the entrance is still very bad...during rain water gets logged stagnation in the whole area hope the renovate the whole area
I visited Walajah Big Mosque during Maghrib prayer. The mosque is located in a predominantly Muslim area of Triplicane, Chennai, not very far from Marina Beach. The environment around the mosque feels lively yet spiritually calm. The wudu (ozu) and toilet facilities are clean and well-maintained, which makes it comfortable for visitors. At present, there is no separate female prayer room, but the gatekeeper informed me that it is under renovation and should be available within about one month. There is also a nearby dargah sharif, which visitors can easily visit along with the mosque. I reached the mosque by auto-rickshaw, which can go directly into the courtyard, making access easy even for first-time visitors. Walajah Big Mosque is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in Chennai, built in the 18th century during the rule of Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot. The mosque is named after him and stands as a symbol of the rich Islamic heritage of Triplicane. Over the years, it has remained a central place for worship, learning, and community gatherings, preserving its traditional character while adapting to modern needs. The area around the mosque is also famous for its halal food streets, with many eateries offering traditional Muslim cuisine, making it a great place to explore after prayers.
Recently visited this mosque after the renovation. The lighting and interiors create a very peaceful and beautiful atmosphere.
